OUTREACH GRANTS AVAILABLE FROM THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Awards are $1000 each. Winners will share their program on the ABS website as well as through a poster at the ABS annual conference. Proposals are due each year on December 1 (emailed to: [email protected]), and awardees will be announced in the Spring.

EARLY CAREER GRANT IN CONVERSATION BEHAVIOR RESEARCH

The third annual Early Career Grant in Conservation Behavior is accepting applications until December 15th. Applicants must have earned a graduate degree (MS or PhD) within five years of the application deadline, are currently not a student or are not tenured in an academic position, and whose research relates to the field of conservation behavior. As many positions within the field of conservation behavior are non-academic, our aim is to provide support for early career researchers who may be working at non-academic institutions. We encourage applicants in postdoctoral positions, those working with zoos, governmental agencies, or nonprofits, and/or those with temporary positions to apply. Applications will be accepted through the online Grant Submission System. All Grants should be submitted online following the Guidelines. View General Grant Submission Guidelines.

Applications will be accepted through the online Grant Submission System and are due December 15, 2024.

CALL FOR OUTREACH FAIR PARTICIPANTS

The Education Committee is looking for labs/individuals to participate in the 2025 Outreach fair at the upcoming 2025 ABS conference. The annual Outreach Fair subcommittee of the Education Committee organizes a public education event at the annual conference with the goal of educating the public.

CALL FOR SYMPOSIA, INVITED SESSIONS & WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

To organize a symposium, an invited paper session, or a workshop for the ABS Annual Meeting, you should first contact the Program Officers to discuss your ideas. We ask you to propose your topic to the Program Officers to make sure that there is no conflict with already existing plans and topics. A symposium should be a profound and stimulating review of an important subject area that currently is a major focus of research. It should be a thorough treatment of past work and current research advances. A symposium should be of general interest to the majority of ABS members. Limited funding is available from ABS to assist with travel, registration, and other expenses for symposia. An invited paper session is a special grouping of papers that focus upon empirical results relating to a particular topic. A workshop is a hands-on exchange of ideas in a more informal setting relative to lectures and symposia. Funding is not available from ABS for expenses related to invited paper sessions and workshops.

Symposia, invited paper sessions, or workshop proposals for the 2025 meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, USA must be submitted online here (https://fs10.formsite.com/spltrak/uxr2ai1vpq/index.html ). The deadline is currently October 11, 2024 (midnight in the last timezone on Earth).

Further information can be found on the ABS website or by contacting the ABS Program Officers:

THE LATIN AMERICAN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (LAAC) SUPPORTS ANIMAL BEHAVIOR MEETINGS AND STUDENTS IN MEXICO AND BRAZIL

The Latin American Affairs Committee (LAAC) supports a variety of efforts to connect ABS members across the Americas. This past year, funds were awarded to partially support two conferences on animal behavior, the Behavioral Ecophysiology Workshop at the Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala (Mexico) and the XL Encontro Anual de Etologia in São Paulo (Brazil). The LAAC also awarded seven memberships to students who received the best poster and talk awards at a long-standing and well-recognized Mexican Animal Behavior meeting (XXVIII Biological Bases of Behavior Meeting in Morelia, Michoacán). You can learn more about LAAC activities and funds provided here: https://www.animalbehaviorsociety.org/web/committees-la-affairs.php

Awardees of the best poster and talk presentations at the XXVIII Biological Bases of Behavior Meeting in Morelia, Michoacán, received memberships to the Animal Behavior Society. The students are shown with ABS member Dr. Luis Felipe Mendoza Cuenca, organizer of this meeting who applied for support from the Latin American Affairs Committee.

HOW DO OUR TEXTBOOKS TREAT EVOLUTION? INFORMATION REQUEST!

Dear Colleagues,

I and several collaborators are interested in understanding how evolutionary topics (specifically, multilevel selection/group selection/kin selection) are discussed in Evolution and Behavior textbooks. If you teach Evolution or Behavior courses, I would be grateful if you would be willing to share what textbook (including open-access textbooks) you assign in your course. Please email the name, publisher, and version of the textbook(s) and the name of the course you teach to me at [email protected]. Feel free to circulate this request widely.

Thanks in advance for any help. I will share the outcome when done.
