Title: Behavior Manager  

 

This position reports to:  Director of Quebec Shelter Operations      

This position directly supervises:  Behavior Supervisor

Behavior Technicians

Volunteers 

FLSA Status: Exempt 

 

Purpose of Position:  Responsible for the direction, development, delivery, and evaluation of the League’s animal behavior programs and protocols. Manage the League’s growing behavior department and programs. Create and innovate best practices, collaborate on strategic goals, and together with the team develop the future state of the behavior department at the League. 

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage the delivery of animal behavior programs. 
  • Innovate and collaborate behavior programs and best practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, including statistical analysis, report creation and presentation, and implement improvements.
  • Consult with League staff and managers to develop procedures and protocols for the treatment, care, and evaluation of animals.
  • Collaborate with and serve as a resource for other animal welfare agencies. 
  • Develop departmental objectives and plans and assist in the development of League initiatives and programs. 
  • Develop SOPs and ensure they are updated, followed, and communicated with staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and monitor budget.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, coach, and counsel staff members and volunteers.
  • Participate in inter-departmental meetings and discussions to support and develop League initiatives.
  • Perform shelter opening and closing duties as needed. 
  • Perform euthanasia and related tasks.

Position Qualifications: Education, Experience, Certification, and Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 

Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Five years’ professional experience working with animals
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to utilize effective problem solving/decision making skills
  • 1-3 years of managing a team, including supervisory personnel
  • Experience leading and managing volunteers  
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

 

Desired

  • Experience working in an animal welfare organization
  • Animal Behavior Association certification (CTC, CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, ACAAB, etc.)
  • General knowledge of animal sheltering software, Chameleon preferred
  • General knowledge of common companion animal medical conditions
  • Experience developing and monitoring budgets  

 

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

Performs work primarily in an office setting. Potentially prolonged periods of sitting and repetitive motion. May work in an area with high noise level.  Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches.  Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, and feces. Occasional lifting with reasonable accommodation.
