Seeking a skilled bird bander for The Grackle Project
Field Assistants
Posted Jan 8
The Grackle Project is a research team in Tempe, AZ studying great-tailed grackles on and around the ASU campus.  Please visit corinalogan.com for more information on the overall project goals and experiments.

We are seeking a part-time research technician that has experience banding birds, and using mist nets and/or other avian trapping techniques.  Daily tasks will include scouting for groups of grackles around campus; determining suitable mist netting locations; setting up and monitoring 1-3 mist nets per day; repairing mist nets if necessary; coordinating with other team members, undergraduate interns and staff; and devising new or modified methods for catching tricky grackles.

This position would start immediately, and run for 4 months with the possibility of extension.  It pays $18.00/hour and all project equipment will be provided.  Unfortunately, we cannot provide housing or benefits, therefore this position is best suited to someone who already lives in Tempe.  The technician may not need a car to get to campus because Tempe has excellent public transportation, however the project can provide a bicycle if the technician desires it. As biologists, we know the importance of diversity and we encourage applications from individuals belonging to groups that are traditionally under-represented in the sciences.

Qualifications:
  • A willingness to wake up early to work outside in the heat or cold
  • Demonstrated ability to work outside for long hours in extreme weather (e.g., hot and humid summer, cold winter) and walk sometimes extensively to find the birds and move among trap locations.
  • Must have previous experience independently banding, measuring and bleeding birds
  • Able to independently trouble-shoot trapping methods to more effectively catch difficult-to-catch grackles.
  • Able to differentiate colored leg bands
  • Demonstrate the potential to be a strong role model for groups that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM.
  • Able to commit to 3 full days per week (approximately 20 hours per week) and start by 1 February.

To apply, email your cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references by 31 January 2019 to Dr. Kelsey McCune: [email protected]. The Grackle Project is a signatory of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (http://www.ascb.org/dora/) and will assess research quality directly rather than using metrics.
