2024 ABS MEETING
To organize a symposium, an invited paper session, or a workshop for the ABS Annual Meeting, you should first contact the Program Officers to discuss your ideas. We ask you to propose your topic to the Program Officers to make sure that there is no conflict with already existing plans and topics. A symposium should be a profound and stimulating review of an important subject area that currently is a major focus of research. It should be a thorough treatment of past work and current research advances. A symposium should be of general interest to the majority of ABS members. Limited funding is available from ABS to assist with travel, registration, and other expenses for symposia. An invited paper session is a special grouping of papers that focus upon empirical results relating to a particular topic. A workshopis a hands-on exchange of ideas in a more informal setting relative to lectures and symposia. Funding is not available from ABS for expenses related to invited paper sessions and workshops. Symposia, invited paper sessions, or workshop proposals for the 2024 meeting in London, Ontario, Canada must be submitted online here. The deadline has been extended and proposals are due on November 27, 2023 (midnight in the last timezone on Earth). The proposals will be circulated to the Executive Committee and then discussed at the Executive Committee meeting.

Latin American Affairs Committee Funding Support for ABS Members to Participate in Plenary/Workshops in Latin America
The Latin American Affairs Committee has annual funds to support the travel of ABS members from the US and Canada to participate in plenaries/workshops organized by Latin American scientists and held in Latin America. This year, the LAAC had the great pleasure of supporting the travel of Dr. Eduardo Fernandez-Duque to the IV Behavioral Biology Annual Meeting of the Southern Cone, 2023 which was attended by 200 participants in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Fernandez-Duque offered a plenary talk titled: "The evolution of pair-living, sexual monogamy and paternal care in primates". He also co-organized, with ABS member A. García de la Chica (Univ. Buenos Aires) and Dr. C. Valeggia (Yale University) a workshop on “Scientific and Statistical Inference in the Behavioral Sciences”. The workshop, which kept presenters and audience (50 people) engaged in a lively discussion until 9pm when the building had to be closed, was so well-received that there is already a mailing list and shared cloud folder for organizing a LatinAmerican network on “causal inference in the behavioral sciences”. Those interested in joining the network should contact Dr. Fernandez-Duque ([email protected]).
Opportunities
Early Career Grant in Conservation Behavior Research
Applicants must be ABS members and may live or work in any country. Members and members-elect of the Executive Committee or the Conservation Committee are not eligible to apply. Applicants must have earned a graduate degree (MS or PhD) within five years of the application deadline, are currently not a student or are not tenured in an academic position, and whose research relates to the field of conservation behavior. As many positions within the field of conservation behavior are non-academic, our aim is to provide support for early career researchers who may be working at non-academic institutions. We encourage applicants in postdoctoral positions, those working with zoos, governmental agencies, or nonprofits, and/or those with temporary positions to apply.
Applications will be accepted through the online Grant Submission System and are due December 15, 2023. All Grants should be submitted online following the Guidelines. View General Grant Submission Guidelines.

Other Items
An international team (Logan S James, Samuel Mehr, Jon T Sakata, Sarah C Woolley, Michael J Ryan) are investigating how humans judge sounds produced by other animals via a short online game. You can hear some amazing animal sounds while you play a short game online, and, at the end, they will tell you which category of animal you are most aligned with.
