Reports to: Reports to Director of Behavioral Medicine Research, Education & Outreach (DBMREO).
Oversee the implementation of training and behavior modification plans for all dogs in the Gigi’s Center for Dog Behavior (GCDB). Lead and manage a team of trainers and training apprentices on training and behavior modification plans that are catered to each individual dog, consistent with Gigi’s mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate a mastery of learning theory, the ability to read and interpret canine body language and intent, and animal welfare tenets and their application to shelter dogs and population management.
Manages a team of dog trainers, their assistants and volunteers to improve the behavior and outcomes of GCDB dogs with the goal of successful, permanent adoption.
Motivates, inspires and guides training team members with diverse skills and personalities.
Creates and manages training team schedules, conduct biannual performance evaluations, and provide oversight and direction for behavior medication plan goals and implementation.
Implements training and behavior modification protocols designed in collaboration with the DBMREO. Measures and reports program outcomes, and makes changes accordingly, under the guidance of the DBMREO.
Contributes to and oversees the process for dog selection criteria, intake process, training needs assessments, emotional status assessments.
Under the guidance of the DBMREO, implements, continuously monitors, and shapes adoption protocols for dogs who have successfully completed their individualized program.
Organizes and contributes to the recording of data regarding behavior, program outcome and adoption outcomes.
Provides educational support for partner shelters (including source and destination shelters, as well as other shelter and rescue organizations) by helping with webinars, reading materials, and seminars. Serves as a consultant to partner agencies on training and behavior modification.
Actively supports staff, volunteers and students; promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of mutual goals and missions.
Represents Gigi’s in a professional and courteous manner at all times, especially when under pressure. Provides quality service to customers, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contribution to the success of our organization.
Supervises and manages the behavior modification team members in the implementation of training and behavior modification protocols. Works closely with the DBMREO to measure outcomes, provide outreach, and source shelter support.
The DTBM reports to the DBMREO to ensure adequate and appropriate implementation of all selection, assessment, training, treatment and outcome measurement protocols.
Direct reports will include three lead dog trainers (CPDT, KPA-KA) and their three training assistants. This also includes oversight of and management of the volunteer training assistants
Work is performed in an animal shelter setting. Standard office and surgical environment, with exposure to hazardous chemicals, anesthetics and sharp objects, potential of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases that can be carried and transmitted by animals. Individual will have extended periods of sitting, standing, stretching and bending. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
