Job Title: Bobcat Trapping Technician

Job Description: 

Researchers in the Wildlife Ecology, Restoration, and Conservation Lab in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation at Virginia Tech (https://fishwild.vt.edu/) are seeking two qualified technicians to work capturing bobcats in Albemarle County, Virginia. The data collected from their GPS collars will be used in research studying wildlife habitat connectivity and bobcat spatial behavior. 

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Running a trapline of cage traps by scouting trap sites using trail cameras, interacting with landowners, checking traps daily for captured animals, setting and resetting traps, baiting and adding a variety of attractants to traps, processing roadkill to be used as bait, and maintaining equipment. 
  • Processing captured bobcats safely and recording data about the animal. 
  • Driving and hiking over hilly terrain in muddy and icy winter conditions. 
  • Use of telemetry to locate collars when needed. 
  • Assisting graduate student with other day-to-day responsibilities. 

 

Housing and field vehicles are provided. Employment will last from January 4 through early April, 2024. 


Qualifications: 

Wildlife capture and handling experience and a valid driver’s license is required. Experience working with predators and/or using cage traps is preferred but not required. Some lifting of heavy equipment (cage traps, processing equipment, etc.) may be required.
