Abstract
Issues like climate change and COVID‑19 have exposed deep public distrust of academic scientists. In today’s political climate, that distrust is contributing to the dismantling of long‑standing scientific processes and institutions. Strengthening respectful, effective communication between scientists and the public is one way to counter this trend. Yet science communication itself has an inclusion problem: just as some groups have been excluded from participating in scientific research, many communities are overlooked as audiences for scientific information that could benefit their lives.
To help address this gap, we launched the podcast I Came For Science in February 2024 (https://www.icameforscience.org/). The show explores the science of sex and reproduction, the paths of the scientists who study these topics, and inclusion in STEM. With support from the ABS Outreach Grant, we are producing a season that highlights early‑career animal behavior researchers from diverse backgrounds who study sex and reproduction and/or work to advance inclusion in STEM.
