Abstract
While dogs’ (Canis familiaris) barks and growls were studied extensively in the last decades, our knowledge about the elements and the extent of their vocal repertoire is still limited, mainly based on wolves’ (Canis lupus) repertoire. Dogs vary greatly in behaviour and appearance as a result of domestication and later breed selection. Thus, we might also expect differences in their vocal behaviour based on phylogenetic distance from wolves, selected function and morphology. We aim to test companion dogs of different breeds and investigate potential factors affecting their vocal behaviour. After overviewing existing paradigms, we developed a two-day laboratory behaviour test battery comprising 13 subtests that represent everyday situations. These were designed to elicit different emotional and motivational states, leading to the production of various vocalisations. We also perform acoustic analyses of the recorded vocalisations and identify context-dependent acoustic differences across vocalisation types. Preliminary analyses show context- and individual-specific variability in call usage, suggesting that our test battery is indeed suitable for mapping dogs’ vocal repertoire.
