Social, Developmental, and Neurological Drivers of Fear Generalization

Abstract


Anthropogenic change is presenting animals with novel suites of multiple stressors where behavioral responses to rapid environmental change are likely to play a crucial role. However, aside from predation, little is known regarding key behavioral responses to these stressors, the extent of consistent individual variation and in particular, correlated behavioral responses (i.e., ‘Fear Generalization’). Theory predicts that: a) animals may generalize their fear responses regardless of the nature of the danger; i.e., that ‘fear is fear’, b) that correlations may arise due to individual differences in developmental or social history, or c.) that differences in how threat cues are perceived may drive correlations. We present results from a series of experiments testing these non-mutually exclusive predictions. We first document differences in the structure of fear generalization across threats in focal invertebrate and vertebrate taxa, presenting results on both the social and developmental drivers of fear generalization.
