Abstract
The Risk Allocation Hypothesis predicts differences in behavioral responses to risk should depend on risk frequency, where pulsed risk should elicit stronger behavioral responses. In the Anthropocene, the frequency of stressors is deviating from historical patterns, yet few studies explicitly test for the effects of stressor frequency on behavioral responses to risk. In addition, aside from predation, little is known regarding individual variation in response to threats and whether responses to different threats are correlated, i.e., ‘Fear Generalization’. We tested the hypothesis that, relative to control or chronic stressor conditions, “pulsed” frequencies of either an abiotic (salt) or biotic (predator) stressor during development induces the strongest behavioral responses to both threats when exposed later in life. We also predicted that “pulsed” stressor frequencies elicit more robust individual variation and fear generalization across threats. We tested these hypotheses using the freshwater bladder snail Physa acuta and present new data on how stressor frequency regimes affect average behavioral responses, repeatability, and fear generalization.
