Emeritus CAAB Information

The Animal Behavior Society officially recognizes the status of Emeritus CAAB (Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist) or Emeritus ACAAB (Associate Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist).
Qualifications: Emeritus status will be granted to retired CAAB or ACAAB members who:

  • Have been certified as a CAAB or ACAAB for more than ten (10) consecutive years, having successfully completed initial certification and at least two recertification processes, and
  • Have served as a member or officer of the Board of Professional Certification (BPC) and/or the Applied Animal Behavior Committee (AABC) for at least one 3-year term.

At any point after completing their second CAAB or ACAAB recertification and while still in good standing with ABS, a member seeking Emeritus status should submit:

  • A request for Emeritus status to the current AABC chair, ABS secretary, BPC Chair and
  • notarized letter, addressed to the current ABS secretary and sent to SPLTrak, attesting to the fact that they are indeed retired, no longer see any clients, and do not participate in the CAAB certification process.

Note: template forms for status request and notarized letter are available for download.

Emeritus CAAB or ACAAB status will be granted to anyone who meets the conditions for qualification and submits the required documents listed above. Emeritus CAAB/ACAABs are not required to recertify or pay CAAB dues, to present at an ABS conference, or to serve on ABS standing committees. Emeritus CAABs and ACAABs must maintain ABS membership and pay annual ABS dues; a lapse in ABS membership may result in loss of Emeritus status.
